there's apparently a minor beef going on with milch and ian now.
if you look at the bottom of this article: http://weblogs.variety.com/on_the_air/2007/08/john-from-cin-2.html
Quote: "I wrote ("Deadwood's") Al Swearingen for Ed...If he'd had that part the show would still be running." |
|
this is what w. earl had to say about that comment:
Quote:The "If Ed had played the role..."
What I know - Ian said some things to another person that he regretted saying. In fact, he phoned the person up a few weeks later and apologized.
What I'm guessing - in the interim, Ian's opinions got back to David. David had a phone interview with VARIETY immediately following his hearing of Ian's choice words. He reacted by mouthing off. |

and if that wasn't enough to make things look bleak... http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117970439.html?categoryid=1019&cs=1
yup, no deadwood on milch's schedule.
and w. earl made a visit to milch's office some days ago:
Quote:W. Earl Brown's blog at MySpace:
"Deadwood News Current mood: disappointed I had a meeting yesterday at an office complex where David Milch's office is located. After completing my scheduled appointment, I stopped by David's to say hello and see what was going on. Luckily, the Maestro was in. And well...
I had been very optimistic that we would be seeing more DEADWOOD episodes, at the least the two promised "movies." I left David's office with my optimism on the wane. It doesn't look good, dear DEADWOOD fans, it doesn't look good...
That ain't to to say the horse is completely dead yet. It is just lying trailside foaming at the nostrils and heaving for breath. Once it is completely dead, I'll try my damnedest to stop beating it." |
|
sorry to be the bearer of all this negative news
| "Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair or f***ing beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back." - A.S. |

Oh well, we've gotta take the bad news with the good, I suppose. Thanks for the update, amaze, even if it's not what we'd like to hear.
The thing is, not to take anything away from from David Milch's writing and vision for the character of Al Swearengen, or from Ed O'Neill's acting, but I have a difficult time picturing anyone other than Ian McShane in that role, regardless of whether Deadwood's still running. Maybe I'd feel the same about Ed O'Neill had he played the character for three seasons... I don't know.
Anyways, I'm curious what Milch's comment about "the show would still be running" meant. Someone should ask him when they get the chance.
