General Spoilers and Information:
10/7/2006 - Lily Tomlin will be the matriarch of a wealthy family in the Highland Park section of Dallas. Some scenes will be shot there, but Pasadena will also stand in for the old-money neighborhood. (source: arktimes.com)
10/16/2006 - Actor Leslie Jordan: "I play Cousin Kenny; my parents are killed in a plane crash and I am raised by Lily and Mary Kay who play sisters. We run Shakespeare Realty in Dallas, Texas, and were rich as s**t. We drive Bentleys, we smoke, we drink, we play poker and we cuss a whole lot. The script is one of the funniest I have ever read." Episode Spoilers:
Ep 101, Pilot:
9/28/2006 - Pilot storyline: The matriarch of the wealthy, successful Shakespeare family, the elegant, acerbic Amelia Shakespeare runs her upscale real estate office in Dallas, while her three children, Jerry, Juliet and Gaylor, deal with their various demons with a mixture of Texas gall and unique Shakespearean eccentricity.
1/23/2007 - In addition to Lily Tomlin, the pilot episode co-star[s] Gary Cole, Mary Kay Place, Katherine LaNasa, Kim Dickens, Eliza Coupe, Leslie Jordan, Sean Bridgers, Ivana Milicevic, David Andrews, Texas Battle, and Cameron Richardson. (source: backstage.com)
Regular and recurring roles cast for the pilot episode:
-Amelia Shakespeare (played by Lily Tomlin) - The Matriarch of the Shakespeare family and founder of their enormously successful Dallas real eatate empire, bohemian glam, mother of three (think Shirley MacLaine), Amelia is a brilliantly successful, cuttingly witty woman whose rambunctious family causes her more amusement than despair. Despite a much-rehabbed daughter (Gaylor), a son (Jerry) baffled by the needs of his wife and mistress, and another daughter (Juliet) in the midst of an acrimonious divorce, Amelia loves her brood, stands by them, offers her acerbic advice even if no one takes it, and still has the energy to run her booming business with style. Series regular:
![[image]](http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/2066/lilytomlinfg2.gif)
-Antoine Best - 25, African American, stunning, well-built, charismatic, earnest, he's the new wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys who's shown some choice real estate by Amelia, C.Z. and Kenny, who's very chatty about the Shakespeares (which doesn't faze Antoine, who claims, "Hey, it's cool. I got family, too"). A good guy, smart, patient, open, Antoine is amazed by both the real estate and the eccentricities of the Shakespeare family. Series regular.
-C.Z. Shakespeare (played by Mary Kay Place) - Amelia's younger sister, 15 years her junior, flawlessly coiffed and groomed, a real Texas pistol, C.Z. is also her partner in the successful family real estate business. Crude where Amelia is witty, C.Z. never hesitates to speak ehr mind and while diplomacy is not her strong suit, she does have a compelling way of expressing herself. Like her sister, C.Z. is the heir to their father's very successful Texas cattle ranch and is very much a fixture on the Dallas social scene. The President of the Almni Debs (for whom she gives a rather frank recitation of the requirements for a Dallas debutante), C.Z. does her best to pull some strings to get her mentally challenged niece, McKenna, into the prestigious Idlewild deb club--and though McKenna is turned down, C.Z. does not give up the fight. Series regular:
![[image]](http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/5593/marykayplacepo3.gif)
-Gaylor Shakespeare (played by Eliza Coupe) - Mid 30's, Amelia's youngest daughter, Gaylor is a real wild child, alarmingly frank, recently emerged from rehab which apparently didn't take too well. Now living in a rock 'n roll tour bus at her family house, where her brother, sister-in-law and their children live, Gaylor has lost her job with her mom's realty company because of some sexual inappropriateness with clients, and is trying to make do with no money and no income. Pragmatic and endearing in her way, Gaylor goes head to head with her strait-laced sister-in-law, Jonelle, but is willing to have things patched up by her brother Jerry. Gaylor is eventually forced to move her bus from Jonelle and Jerry's back yard, but quickly finds another place to park it, thanks to her vindictive aunt Juliet. Series regular.
-Jerry Shakespeare (played by Gary Cole) - 40, Amelia's son, he's a rich, affable good ole boy who's having some trouble juggling his mistress Marilyn and his unsatisfying marriage to Jonelle but finds solace in the purchase of a gunboat with his soon-to-be-ex brother-in-law, Saxby. A decent guy who's overwhelmed and/or puzzled by the needs of his womenfolk, he does his best to take care of Marilyn (who's got cancer and a lunatic husband), Jonelle (who doesn't mind the mistress but wants his sister Gaylor off the property) and Gaylor, whom he delicately and emotionally throws off his land at his wife's request. Series regular:
![[image]](http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/228/colegary03gc9.jpg)
-Jonelle Shakespeare (played by Kim Dickens (Joanie Stubbs on "Deadwood")) - 38, the mother of three kids, the daughter of an evangelical car dealer who has a personal relationship with Jesus (that seems to be more fulfilling than the one she has with her husband), Jonelle is married to Jerry, and lives in his family house with him, their three kids, and her recently rehabbed sister-in-law, Gaylor. A strait-laced, insecure woman devoted to the status quo, Jonelle is very worried about keeping up with the Joneses, whether she's fretting over not having tantric sex or the fact that her friends are getting their housekeepers facelifts. A do-gooder who bases her charities on whatever she sees on Oprah, Jonelle has taken in a Mexican exchange student, Julio, and is understandably horrified to find Julio and Gaylor engaged in some inappropriate behavior. Her confrontation with Gaylor turns physical, and she has to resort to asking Jerry--whose affair with Marilyn she's well aware of--to throw out his sister. Series regular:
![[image]](http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/4446/kimdickensaf8.gif)
-Juliet Shakespeare (played by Katherine La Nasa) - Amelia's oldest daughter, mid 40's, one of Preston Hollow's (a wealthy Dallas suburb) most successful baby boomer socialites, Juliet is the mother of Quinn (at the Sorbonne) and the beautiful, mentally challenged McKenna, whose dream is to be one of the six elite Idlewild debutantes. Smart, energetic, pragmatic, Juliet is in the midst of an acrimonious divorce from her husband, Saxby Hall, who's about to be married to a younger woman (named Montserrat), but Juliet refuses to vacate their home until the divorce is final, and shoots clay pigeons in the yard whenever Montserrat meets with the wedding planner. With her pending divorce and McKenna's disappointment weighing heavily on her, Juliet finds true comfort in the love and eccentricities of her mother, aunt and sister. Series regular:
![[image]](http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/8325/katherinelanasawn5.jpg)
-Julio Vera - 16-17 years old, he's a good-natured Mexican exchange student living with Jonelle and Jerry's family. Enthralled with American TV--he gets very involved with Maury Povich and the Lifetime Channel ("Almost no one is happy there")--he's kept pretty busy by Jonelle, who has him doing lots of chores around the house. He's immediately attracted to Gaylor, who returns the attraction, with the result that Jonelle walks in on a fairly heated physical encounter between them. Series regular/recurring.
-Kenny Kingman (played by Leslie Jordan) - 50, pudgy, gay, he's a Shakespeare cousin and Amelia's live-in, right hand man. Chatty, occasionally catty, Kenny goes with Amelia and C.Z. as they show Dallas Cowboys star Antoine Best some real estate, and enlightens Antoine about the Shakespeare clan till Amelia shuts him up. Kenny joins Amelia, C.Z., Juliet and Gaylor for a girls lunch at THE ladies lunch place in Dallas, and fits right in, coming up with some good dish about Montserrat passing bad botox in Houston ("P.S., in Dallas, you do not mess with the botox"). Series regular/recurring:
-Lyle Hartsong (played by Sean Bridgers (Johnny Burns on "Deadwood")) - Marilyn's psychotically abusive husband, loud, arrogant, self-absorbed, Lyle shoots a fast-food sandwhich Marilyn brings home for him because it has pickles on it, and likes to light matches and flick them at their daughter Evian's hair. Brought to court for reckless endangerment of a minor, discharging a firearm inside city limits and a few other infractions, Lyle tries his best to deflect the judge from his case and pleads not guilty. Forced to take a sensitivity training course which he swears changed his life--he now writes Haiku--he furiously confronts to Retta Davis that he has no intention of abiding by the restraining order she's filed against him on behalf of Marilyn and Evian. Series regular:
![[image]](http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/8510/seanbridgerslo9.jpg)
-Marilyn Hartsong - 35, built, small-town beautiful, good-natured, a little vague, Marliyn used to be Jerry's receptionist but is now his mistress and has been set up by him as the proprietress of a mattress store. Marilyn is grateful to Jerry but is beset by problems: she's undergoing chemo for cancer and she's married to the psychotically abusive Lyle Hartsong, with whom she has a 15 year old daughter, Evian. Very needy at this point in her life, Marilyn is unable to live with Lyle, against whom she files a restraining order, and can't continue to stay at the mattress store, so she gets Jerry to check her into the hospital--where she apparently plans on staying for a while. Series regular.
-McKenna - 18, slightly retarded, model pretty, with huge eyes and lips, she's the daughter of Juliet and Saxby. High functioning, aware that she's a 'special needs' kid, McKenna is both childish and imperious, as befits a very spoiled child of great wealth. She wants more than anything to be included in the six Idlewild Debutantes, and when she's denied admission, she tells Juliet, "I'm not giving up, Mother". Series regular.
-Montserrat - Female, a long-legged, well-endowed exotic young woman, Saxby Hall's fiancee, she's a feng shui and Watsu massage expert who drives a Vegan BMW (no animal products). Montserrat keeps Saxby sexually satisfied beyond his wildest dreams (she calls him "my sweet release") as she plans a wedding that includes a $50,000 wedding dress based on the one Melania Trump wore. Montserrat complains to Saxby about her problems with the vindictive Juliet, who won't move out of the house and shoots clay pigeons whenever the wedding planner comes over--but her own attempt to reconcile with Juliet, in her way, proves disastrous. Series regular.
-Retta Davis - 30, African American, plus sized, bright, tough, strong, Retta's the daughter of Amelia Shakespeare's long-time housekeeper who was put through law school by the Shakespeare family. Now a practicing lawyer, Retta is savvy enough to handle the high-stakes divorce case of Juliet Shakespeare and compassionate enough to advise the battered Marilyn Hartsong to take out a restraining order against her abusive husband. Retta single-handedly puts the fear of God in Lyle Hartsong when he comes to intimidate her, and later kicks back and relaxes by playing poker with the Shakespeare women (and Kenny). Series regular.
-Saxby Hall - Mid 40's, smart, charming, a younger Texas version of Ted Turner, the Chain Link Fence King of Texas, he's Juliet's soon-to-be ex-husband, who's still living in the same house as her and their youngest daughter, McKenna. Helplessly smitten with the sexual proclivities of his new girlfriend, the young, exotic Montserrat, Saxby does his best to be civil during the acrimonious divorce proceedings, and runs interference between Juliet and Montserrat when, for example, Montserrat complains that Juliet shoots clay pigeons when the wedding planner comes to the house. Series regular.
Non-Regular roles being cast:
-Ashley - The youngest daugher of Jonelle and Jerry, she's in the State Cheer and Dance Championship, where she sings and dances in an elaborate Moulin Rouge costume, taking her moves and facial expressions from her coaching mother. At a family dinner that night, she's rebuked by her dad for talking on her cell phone (she can't understand why--she's got unlimited minutes after 4) and curiously asks her Aunt Gaylor about a vivid but unfortunately inappropriate expression she uses. 4 lines, 3 scenes.
-Benjamin Bidwell III - 8 years old, from a very wealthy family, Benjamin drives a toy $50,000 Maserati, and gives a desperate but cajoling Gaylor a ride to the Shakespeare office by way of the 7-Eleven, where she buys him some forbidden candy. 2 lines, 3 scenes.
-Brooke - 14, blonde, baby-faced, she's the middle child of Jonelle and Jerry. A devout young lady who likes to sing hymns and over-emote, she wears an engagement ring because she's engaged to Jesus, part of an abstinence program at her church. 3 lines, 2 scenes.
-Cameron Shakespeare (played by Michael McShae) - 16, spoiled, doesn't know what continent he's living on, he's the son of Jerry and Jonelle. He joins the family for dinner. 1 line, 1 scene.
-Don - A middle aged man who introduces "the incomparable C.Z. Shakespeare" at a fund-raiser he's hosted, Don is apparently on the Idlewild Debutantes committe, and is lobbied by C.Z. on behalf of McKenna. 1 speech & 1 line, 2 scenes.
-Erin - The overly chirpy waitress at the restaurant where the Shakespeare women (and Kenny) have lunch, she responds to their orders of shrimp salad with an enthusiastic "Awesome," prompting an acerbic reaction from Amelia. 4 lines, 1 scene.
-Evian Hartsong - 15, heavily pierced, the daughter of Marilyn and Lyle, she's the unhappy child of a drunken, abusive father and a helpless, ill mother. Questioned by Retta about how she and her dad spend time together, she volunteers that he likes to light matches and throw them at her hair. 1 speech & 3 lines, 2 scenes.
-Fred - A salesman at the Shakespeare real estate office, he tells Amelia that Antoine Best is here, and interested only in the most prestigious properties. 1 speech & 1 line, 1 scene.
-Judge - Male, 50's to 60's, this Texan judge confronts Lyle Hartsong in court about his reckless endangerment of a minor, discharging a firearm within city limits, and several other distasteful behaviors. He/she is disgusted with Lyle's run-around and sets bail at $5,000. 2 speeches & 3 lines, 1 scene.
-LaPrincess - 40ish, African American, she's the maid at Jonelle's house, who cooks "Fakin Bacon" for Gaylor (per Jonelle's orders) and is not too helpful otherwise. 4 lines, 1 scene.
-Roland - 40 to 60, Amelia's Asian servant, he politely interrupts Amelia's poker night with C.Z., Gaylor, Juliet and Kenny to tell her that the family jet has been reserved to pick up Montserrat's wedding dress. 1 speech & 1 line, 1 scene.
-Star/Kim - These two rough looking women sit with Lyle Hartsong in the Purple Cracker bar and listen to him expound on his "sensitivity training". 1 line, 1 scene; 2 lines, 1 scene respectively.
